Rebates or Reimbursements

For Psychology Services


There are a number of different funding options for Psychology treatment depending on the reason for seeking help from a Psychologist. Private Health Fund and Medicare rebates can be claimed following your consultation at The SAM Centre using our HICAPS or EFTPOS Machine.

Reimbursements for third party (eg. Insurance Agent) funded services can be sent directly to the funding body following your consultation at The SAM Centre. Gap payments might be charged on top of third party reimbursement for services.


Better Access/Better Start for Children:
Mental Health Care Plans (MHCP)

You will require a referral letter from your treating physician and/or a MHCP with a diagnoses of a mental health conditions in order to access any of the services below:

  • Individual Psychology Treatment Services
  • Group Psychology Treatment Services
  • Focused Psychological Strategies (FPS)
  • Clinical Psychology Services
  • MHCPs are available for individuals (children, adolescents, and adults) who are having concerns with:

  • Alcohol Use Disorder
  • Anxiety Disorders
  • Attention Deficit Disorders
  • Bereavement Disorders
  • Bipolar Disorders
  • Conduct Disorder
  • Co-occurring Anxiety & Depression
  • Depression
  • Drug Use Disorder
  • Eating Disorders
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
  • Panic Disorder
  • Phobic Disorder
  • Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • Psychotic Disorders
  • Schizophrenia
  • Sexual Disorders
  • Sleep Problems
  • Please book a long consultation with your treating physician to obtain a referral and/or MHCP. You can also request a referral to a particular Psychologist at The SAM Centre.

  • Rebates can be claimed from Medicare for a maximum of 10 Individual and/or Group Psychology services per year
  • You must review with your treating physician every 4 to 6 sessions
  • Please view the Medicare Schedule of Fees to review rebates offered for General/Clinical Psychology services.


    Chronic Disease Management (CDM)

    You will require a referral from your treating physician to access a range of allied health services (including Psychology) to help treat chronic or complex illnesses such as (but not limited to):

  • Asthma/Respiratory Illnesses
  • Auto Immune Diseases
  • Cardiovascular Illness
  • Diabetes
  • Digestive Conditions
  • Musculoskeletal Conditions
  • Stroke
  • Terminal Illnesses
  • A maximum of 5 sessions per calendar year can be claimed. Please review the Medicare Schedule of Fees for the rebates offered for these CDM Psychology services.


    Department of Veteran Affairs (DVA)

    You will need a referral from your treating physician to access General/Clinical Psychology treatment for Veterans of War Psychological services.

  • Please see your general practitioner for a DVA referral form
  • The total number of services provided depends on the specifics of your claim
  • No gap fee will be charged for Veterans psychological services
  • Please review DVA Schedule of Fees Clinical Psychology and DVA Schedule of Fees General Psychology.


    Employer Assistance Programs (EAP)

    You will need to contact your employer to ascertain if you are eligible for EAP services for any personal or work related issue.

  • Typically up to 5 sessions will be funded
  • The employer will be charged the current private fees at The SAM Centre - View Fee Schedule

  • Non-Directive Pregnancy Support Counselling (NDPS)

    You will need a referral from your treating practitioner to access a Psychologist (with specific training - view our Psychologists) for current or recent pregnancy concerns such as:

  • Making decisions and exploring options related to the pregnancy
  • Coming to terms with unexpected outcomes (eg. stillbirth, miscarriage, genetic conditions, problems at birth, cot death)
  • Dealing with emotions/feelings related to pregnancy, birth or early months of being a parent
  • Discussing the pregnancy with others (eg. partner, children, parents, religious or cultural groups)
  • Identify issues needing to be addressed by other Health Professionals
  • Please review the Medicare Schedule of Fees for rebates offered for pregnancy related Psychology services.


    North Western Primary Health Network (NWPHN)

    You will require a referral and/or MHCP from your treating physician (who is located in North West Melbourne catchment area) to access Child and Adolescent Psychology services at The SAM Centre through low income CAREinMind Targeted Psychological Support Service funding.

  • Please book a long consultation with your treating physician to obtain a referral and/or MHCP
  • Up to 12 Psychological services, with a medical review every 3 - 6 sessions can be accessed
  • No gap fee will be charged
  • Please review our Psychologists at The SAM Centre who are registered to provide Child and Adolescent NWPHN service.


    Private Health Fund Insurance

    You will most likely need “extras” cover on your Insurance Policy in order to claim rebates for individual, couple or group, clinical/general Psychology services.

  • The amount reimbursed will differ depending on your Private Health Fund and your level of cover

  • Transport Accident Commission (TAC)

    You will need a referral from your treating physician to access Psychology services to help treat transport or vehicle-related injuries or illnesses.

  • Individual, Family or Group Counselling services can be provided
  • The total number of services provided will depend on the specifics of your claim

    Victims of Crime (VOC)

    The Victims of Crime Tribunal (VOCAT) can award the costs of psychology treatment as compensation to victims of crime, following a Psychological assessment and submission of a report.

  • The total number of services provided will depend on the specifics of your claim
  • Please review the VOC Schedule of Fees for Psychology treatment. You can Lodge a VOCAT Application here or contact local police where crime was reported for further information.


    Work Safe (Workers Compensation)

    You will need a referral from your treating physician to access Psychology services for work-related injuries or illnesses.

  • Individual, Family or Group Counselling services can be provided
